The elevator brought us back to the main floor with the kitchen. Callie no longer sat at the table, however. I dumped the blue mushrooms onto the clean, shiny counter and looked up at Edwin, who was rinsing the various veggies off in the sink.

“Is there anything I can do to help?” I asked him.

“All I need you to do is to be my taste-tester,” Edwin said cheerfully. “It shouldn’t take too long to make once I have the dough rising.”

I sat down at the table, though I still watched Edwin working in the kitchen. Edwin measured out flour in a cup before pouring it in a bowl with some water. Then he pulled out a chopping board and an intimidatingly sharp chef’s knife and went at cutting up the vegetables. His knife moved with amazing speed, creating perfectly even cuts. I was no stranger to seeing skilled chefs, but nothing like Edwin. He paused his chopping to dump purple berries in a pan over the stove. He stirred them for a moment before returning to the cutting board.

My eyes were drawn away from the kitchen when Mary came into view, holding a tray with some mugs of tea. She handed one to me and sat on the opposite side of the table. She tapped on her mug and smiled up at me.

“After we eat, training can finally begin,” she announced.

“Training?” Edwin inquired from his place in the kitchen.

“I’m going to teach him some of the basics of Sin magic. We are starting with Pride,” Mary said, raising her mug to her lips. “It’ll be useful for all sorts of things.”

“You’re just non-stop training now, huh?” Edwin asked me. “Maybe Blair will be awake by the time you are done with Mary.”

“I–” I was interrupted when I heard the clang of the knife hitting the metallic counter and Edwin loudly exclaiming, “Ow!” I turned quickly and saw him holding his pointer finger, a pained expression on his face.

“You klutz,” Mary remarked, jokingly.

“Hey!” Edwin protested.

Mary got up, going to Edwin. “Let me see it.”

Edwin held out his hand, and even I could see from several feet away that the cut was a nasty one. He shook his head disapprovingly. “I’ve got this.”

He moved his hand to cover his wound, I blinked, and when his previously injured hand was in view again, the cut was gone. There wasn’t even a scar left to show. I stared in shock, trying to figure out what had happened.

“I didn’t know you had healing magic!” I said.

“I only have a little,” Edwin replied, shrugging nonchalantly. “I can’t heal anything much bigger than a scratch on my own, but I’m handy at making potions for the things my magic can’t heal.”

“Blair told me a little about your speed ability. That is indeed different, correct? Your ability to heal is magic, right?” I asked for clarity’s sake.

Edwin nodded. “Yes, it is.”

“I wonder why she didn’t tell me,” I muttered.

“I don’t think she could’ve,” Edwin replied. “I swear, I see things she wants to say in those eyes of her, but they just won’t come out.
