MARS

Sunday morning, I woke on the couch to the quiet sounds of Cord in the kitchen. I could tell he was trying not to wake me, but I was a light sleeper—thanks to living in hell for five years—and any sound louder than a pin drop woke me. At least now I knew it was okay—the sounds were coming from Cord—Daddy Cord? We hadn’t worked out the details, but I was kind of anxious to do so.

Dog food clinked in the metal bowl for Whiskey who came running, the clicking of his nails like a perfect drumbeat. I got up from my bed on the couch and went to the bathroom in the master suite, removing the cling wrap Cord had bought for me to use instead of the duct tape that tore away hair and skin when I removed it, leaving scars to remind me of the monster who’d proclaimed himself to be my owner. I would definitely never forget that bastard.

I wadded the plastic into a ball and shoved it into the trash can next to the toilet, wondering how the cage thing worked. After I showered, I went to look for it in the dresser Cord had been kind enough to share, coming up empty.

I dressed without wrapping, which felt quite strange, and I went into the kitchen where he was sitting with coffee. Whiskey was asleep under the table, his front left paw on Cord’s foot as the handsome man read something on his phone.

From my spot by the entrance, I watched him. A pair of tortoiseshell half glasses rested on the tip of his nose that he occasionally glanced over the top to check Whiskey was still sleeping, shining a kind smile the dog’s way.

When I stepped into the kitchen, Whiskey’s tail began scraping across the floor slowly. Cord pulled off his glasses and turned to me, grinning as if I was the best thing he’d seen in a long time. “Good morning. How’d you sleep?” he asked.

I went to the fridge for the orange juice container before I found a small glass in the cabinet, surprised that Tanner and Kelso had left all of their kitchen stuff for us—really everything except their bedroom set.

“Better than the other night. Are they coming back for the rest of their things?” I asked as I filled my glass and replaced the juice, standing at the side of the table facing Cord.

“Why are you up so early?” he asked, not answering me as his eyes followed my every move. I glanced up, unable to really take my gaze from his face. His smile seemed to make the already bright kitchen even brighter.

“I’m up because it’s time to walk Whiskey. Are they coming back for the rest of it?” I asked again as I scanned everything still on the granite kitchen counters.

At the mention of the sweet dog’s name, his tail started moving faster over the floor, which had Cord laughing. I sat down at the table and stared at him, trying to sort through the millions of questions running through my mind.
