Step 2. Measure

Measure the following using an accurate beam or electronic scale:

6 grams of potassium nitrate

4 grams of powdered sugar

0.5 grams of sodium bicarbonate (baking soda)

Step 3. Combine Ingredients

Place the potassium nitrate, powdered sugar, and sodium bicarbonate in a closed container and shake until well mixed.

Step 4. Heat the Mixture

Put on your safety glasses and find a place outdoors for the following steps. Set an electric skillet for 285° F. Alternatively, you can use a pot or heat-proof bowl on a carefully controlled electrical (not open gas flame) hot plate heated to 285° F. Add the entire smoke screen mixture and stir continually with a plastic spatula. In one to two minutes, the mixture will soften and then melt into something that looks like runny peanut butter. When that happens, it’s ready to be shaped or poured into a mold.
