He believed that women found him irresistible, and he was always ready to defend his honor, by force if necessary. In the final analysis, Chris the long-haired freak had turned into Chris the macho man.

Macho behavior indicates an attitude of male superiority. It expresses men's desire to wield power over women and to keep them in subservient positions. The macho attitude is more revealing of a fear of women, though, than of any real conviction of superiority. Macho behavior lets a man compensate for his feelings of weakness, dependency, and passivity; the apparent toughness of macho behavior is only a facade. Like Chris, many men nevertheless still tend to adopt macho attitudes. They do not really feel like men unless they follow the macho model. Fortunately, though, the idea that real men don't cry is going out of fashion.
