CHAPTER 6

Jürgen Stein had finally decided to make his move.

It didn’t matter to him whether or not Aarash Zubair was guilty. He quite frankly didn’t give a damn. What he cared about was his own fame and notoriety, and he lived by one motto.

Fortune favours the bold.

Knowing full well that Department 89 would be coming soon to rescue their agent, he had decided to preempt their arrival. He decided that when they arrived, they would not find it so easy to snatch their boy back because the town would be under siege.

Let’s give the media something to feast on! And if it embarrassed Meyer at the same time? That would be a delightful fringe benefit.

First it was a matter of whipping the mob up into a frenzy. This was not particularly difficult. The victims were well-liked and Stein got the town feeling as if Zubair was guilty as hell but was getting a free pass because of his refugee status. The police overlooking the knife offence helped with that.

Second, Stein played to everyone’s fears and insecurities. Unemployment was high, and the perception of refugees constantly coming into Germany to take jobs and accommodation was fuelling resentment amongst a lot of Germans.

Third, he offered the residents a way to fight back and make a statement.

He ordered his people to grab Zubair when he left the police station. Then shortly afterwards, his most trusted lieutenants, armed with baseball bats, walked into the small understaffed police station and relieved the stunned police officers of their weapons. They threw everyone into the cells and locked the doors.

The town’s judge and prosecutor both received a visit at their offices and were similarly bundled into a cell alongside a stunned chief of police, who now knew that the situation was officially out of his control.

Next came the members of the council who were given a choice. Work with Stein or be thrown into a cell and forgotten about. Half of the councillors decided to throw their lot in with Stein, either through fear or conviction. The other half were pushed protesting into the already overflowing cells.

Last of all, the phone lines were cut and the radio station taken over.

Hofstadt was now under the iron-grip control of Jürgen Stein and the German Patriots Party. And it only took a couple of hours.
