My brother, who was struggling with his Spanish lessons, one day needed help ordering a bouquet of flowers, the bouquet being a surprise for his little ladyfriend, a thought from afar, and I’m not sure I completely understood his calculations, but apparently the number of flowers in the bouquet referred to the date they met, and my brother also wanted my thoughts about the flowers—their colors, their scents—because he believed his friend preferred discreet flowers, wildflowers, like me apparently, and he also needed a hand to come up with the sweet little note in Spanish, and fortunately for my brother I didn’t have a little ladyfriend, which meant I could devote my attention to his.

Several times I’ve asked Uncle if he’s ever been in love, and every time he’s told me about a certain Karine, a thing that went back to preschool, and that’s more or less all I know about it, but on the other hand I do know that several times Uncle visited the clubs of Pigalle in the company of his friend Manu, and on that score I remember some not-particularly-glorious anecdotes involving surly sidewalk touts, stories where Uncle never got what he’d paid for, but deep down I don’t think he cared that much about ogling the dancing women, because it was Manu who was leading him into it, and I think Uncle has never been sexually attracted to anyone or anything, but my brother says of course he has, that’s the only way it can be, but I wouldn’t be so categorical, because after all Uncle lives in a harem, in the middle of naked odalisques lounging on the beach, in his father’s paintings, and they don’t seem to have any effect on him.

One day I was sitting in the living room reading, and when Uncle came home from work he went into the kitchen, and he put what he’d bought in the refrigerator, and he said it had been a hot day, hotter than usual, and they were saying there’d be rain tomorrow, then he stopped halfway up the stairs and he said it was weird, another vegetable cleaner, Catherine, was always talking to him, and I asked if this Catherine was a nice woman and Uncle answered yes, a very nice woman, and since Uncle was still standing glued to the spot halfway up the staircase, I asked him to tell me a little more about her, and Uncle confided that Catherine was about five feet five inches tall, like me apparently, only much fatter, and she had chestnut hair, and a diamond in her nose, and she was very fond of crime novels, then I told him I thought this Catherine sounded very nice and she was probably trying to seduce him while they cleaned vegetables, and Uncle seemed very pleased to hear that, as if it confirmed a suspicion of his and now he didn’t need to talk anymore, he went on upstairs, and I realized that this was the first
