Chapter Seven

Do I Have To?

The next Monday, when Abby arrived at the barn after school, it was quiet and empty. A blue ribbon decorated Lily and China’s stall. A note hung tacked on the board for her.

Bring in Starlet early and give her a leaf of hay. Jessica Carter is coming right after school for a lesson. Then come find me. I’ll be in my apartment.

Thanks,

Elena

Abby hurried to the pasture. Glory raised her head, then trotted toward the gate. “You think it’s time for you to eat, don’t you?” She haltered and led the mare from the pasture. “You win the grand prize—hay.”

She settled the pony in her stall and refilled the bucket with fresh water. She inspected a leaf of hay. After patting it to make sure it wasn’t dusty, she stuck her nose into the stems and sniffed before deciding it was good enough to offer a special pony.

Wishing she could stay and listen to the pony chew, Abby gave her one more hug. “Wish me luck. I’m in trouble again. But don’t worry. I’ll fix it, whatever it is. We have to be together.”

She tapped lightly on the apartment door, hoping she wouldn’t be heard and she could get back to Glory. But Miss Elena said, “Come in.”

“Hi. It’s me. You wanted to see me? Did I do something?”

“I wanted to talk to you. Now that Jessica’s pony has settled into her new routine, it’s time to get Jessica started with riding lessons. I’m hoping she’ll come a lot next week during Thanksgiving break. Your family staying in town for the holiday?”

“Yes. If I can, I’ll be here every day except the actual turkey day.”

“Terrific. I’d like you to help Jessica bond with the pony. Can you do that?”

Her lips trembled as the words dribbled from her mouth. Her thoughts spiked fears of Jessica coming between her and Glory. “Wouldn’t Lily be better? She’s friendly to everyone. Lily would be a great friend for Jessica.”

Miss Elena dropped her chin and narrowed her eyes, looking at Abby over a pair of imaginary glasses. “What did you say?”

“Yes, ma’am. I’d be happy to.” Abby’s face smiled, but her heart groaned.

“Great. Thank you. Who better than you to help Jessica learn what she needs to know about her new mare? I’m glad you’ve got this.”

“I got this.” Abby pulled the door shut behind her. “I’d rather be locked in the tack room with a Diva.” The drag on her heart made it impossible to see how helping Jessica could do anything except push Glory farther out of Abby’s reach. She loved the palomino pony. And Jessica’s mom loved her. That was obvious from the way she pampered the mare and didn’t complain about the repair bills. She wasn’t too sure Jessica cared, but they weren’t exactly friends, so who knew?

Now I have to help her make friends with the pony I love. Then, like it was written in the sky just for her, she figured it out. Helping Jessica might be the only way to keep Glory at the barn since Miss Elena has about had it with her.
