“So,” Leanne said, “demons.”

“Correct,” replied Simon. He closed the Historia minor and replaced it on its lectern in the Letterbox’s grand library. “I understand if this is difficult to accept.”

Leanne shook her head. “That’s the weird part. I think I do accept it. It’s the only thing that really explains everything. Demons that can possess people and… and burst into flames when they die…”

“Actually, I was going to ask about that part,” said Abby. “What was up with the whole spontaneous combustion thing?”

“A demon can’t survive on Earth without a host body,” said Natalie. “Not for long, anyway. If the host body is destroyed, the demonic spirit is usually sucked back to Hell pretty quickly, and the energy from that release often burns up the body.”

“And… and this is what you two do every day?” Leanne demanded. “Kill demons and do magic and live in a secret pocket dimension inside an old post office?”

Simon smiled. “Well, when you put it that way, it sounds perfectly absurd.”

Leanne reached across the table and squeezed Abby’s hands. As soon as they had reached the Letterbox, Simon had given Abby a draught of his Bonnesante Potion. Her arm had clicked back into its socket without any fuss, and all the cuts and bruises she had received over the course of the day had faded into bad memories.

“When you said you had a big important thing to tell me,” Leanne stammered, “I never even imagined… I mean, this is… this… what even happens now? There’s no way we can go back to our apartment with those… Following things running around! For God’s sake, Kelly was there! She… she has a key…” She made the sign of the cross and whispered, “Mother of God, I shared a bathroom with a demon.”

“Until this is over, you’ll stay here,” Simon said. “The Letterbox has enough space for all of us. We can provide most of the creature comforts of life, and there are ways to procure what we don’t already have. The protective charms around the Anointed Gate ensure that nothing gets in here if I don’t want it to. As for Miss Munro, I’ll admit that I don’t know how long she’s been Varr’rak’s host. That was… not a twist I expected. But I swear, if there is any possibility of saving her, I will do my best to make it happen.” He looked Abby in the eye and added, “Don’t forget, she was one of my students too.”

“And none of this is permanent,” said Natalie. “The Enlightening only works during the Alignment, and the Alignment never lasts more than a couple weeks. If we can keep Abby out of the Following’s hands until it’s passed, then that’s it. The Deacon’s whole plan is screwed.”

Leanne laughed nervously. “Yeah, and then what happens? You guys said it yourselves: The Deacon’s been planning this for 25 years! If we just try to wait him out, there’s no way he’ll take it lying down! He’ll keep throwing everything he has at us!”

“And we’ll throw it right back,” Abby said.
