It was late afternoon at the lake in the woods. I stood up, my joints stiff, and walked over to the others. None of us now believed the trout were going to rise on this day. Instead, we lounged idly on the slope. We lay on our backs and gazed up at the tree canopy. I thought about perch. I thought about Gunnar Larsen, the legendary news editor at the Dagbladet newspaper, who also wrote very good books. Larsen has said that he got the idea for one of his books while cleaning a perch net. When he first started cleaning the net, he didn’t have a single thought in his head. By the time he was finished, the entire plot of his novel had been hatched, worked out, cut and dried. The only thing left was to start writing.

Geir and David gathered their things. The acknowledgment that this would not be a successful trout-fishing day had been lingering in the air for quite some time, and now they had decided to head home. They hoisted their backpacks, said goodbye, and then they were off, disappearing through the pine barren.
