Chapter Nine

Seth

As usual, Lexi came in and made herself at home. Tossed her bag on the couch, pulled off her parka and headed straight for my worktable near the back window.

“Whoa, you’ve got some great stuff here,” she said, pulling up a chair to go through it all. “What’s this?” She held up a hunk of black rock riddled with tiny sparkly bits.

I squinted at it. “I found that at the beach last summer. No idea what it is. I don’t know my stones like you do.”

“That’s what she said,” Lexi said, and promptly cracked up, her hand flying up to cover her mouth. “Sorry, Bilal.”

“Sorry for what?” I said, turning to look at Bilal. He was hanging his parka on the coat tree in the corner, and yes, he did indeed look shocked.

Gotta love Lexi’s uncensored sense of humor… er, not.

I shot her a cool it look and went to hang up my parka. “Maybe I should go,” Bilal said softly. “And let you catch up with your friend.”

He didn’t sound angry, just bummed out. As bummed out as I was myself. “It’s not like that with Lexi and me, I swear.”

“Does she know that?”

“You guys talking about me?” Lexi called. “That’s kinda rude. I mean, I’m sitting right here. You could speak up and let me in on the good gossip.”

Bilal’s face flushed redder than I’d ever seen it. “W-we weren’t…”

“Think we should tell him, Seth?”

Oh shit. No, Lexi, please… no.

Bilal’s liquid brown gaze darted between me and Lexi. “Tell me what?”

From the oh fuck, I’m sorry look on Lexi’s face, she’d obviously picked up on my panic. “Me and Seth have been buds for a couple of years now, but that’s as far as it goes. For one thing…” She grinned. “I’m into girls lately.”

“Lately?” Bilal echoed.

“Kinda cold in here, huh, Seth?” she said, rubbing her hands up and down both arms. I went to flick on the thermostat, my gut twisting in knots. I didn’t think she’d screwed up on purpose, but every time Lexi opened her mouth, it was a crapshoot. “College is all about trying new things, new experiences. Doesn’t mean it has to stick. Although,” she added, darting me a Don’t worry, dude, I got this look that sent my gut into freefall, “I’ve never known Seth to date anyone for shits and giggles. He takes his boyfriends very seriously.”

“What about his girlfriends?” Bilal asked, folding his arms over his chest.

Christ, Bilal, what’re you doing? Trying to pick a fight?

“Drop it,” I said quietly, laying my hand on his arm. “She doesn’t deserve this third degree.”

“And that’s my cue to go.” Lexi grabbed her bag, pulling on her parka as she made for the door.

I caught her before she got there, whispering, “I’m sorry. I had no idea he was going to react like that.”

“What’re you apologizing for?” She knotted her scarf around her neck. “You should be flattered. Nobody I’ve dated ever got that jealous.”

Not exactly a selling point.

I held the door for her while she zipped up her parka and threw a quick glance inside in Bilal’s direction.
