For you have need of endurance, so that when you have done the will of God, you may receive what is promised.

—Hebrews 10:36 (nrsv)

The questions and concerns I hear most often about fasting are, “I think I might be called to fast, but I’m not sure if I can do it;” “What if I start and don’t finish?” “What if it’s just too hard?” The thought of starting a fast and then not finishing it keeps many women from ever fasting at all. The idea of not eating for hours, days, or weeks can be a little frightening. The truth is, anyone who is called to fast can complete a liquids-only fast with good preparation and some knowledge of what to expect.

Since fasting has both a physical and spiritual aspect, successful fasting requires recognizing the challenges that each aspect brings to fasting. During a fast, the physical aspects are the most challenging. After the fast, the spiritual aspects are the most challenging.
