Chapter 23

It didn’t take us long to leave Black Glen. The people were so anxious about the sudden changes that they paid us no attention when we left for good.

As soon as we arrived outside the park, Mateo and Angel embraced Samira and Briar.

Aris came to my side and linked his fingers through mine. I leaned into him as we watched the soulmates reunite. By the way the men clung to my friends, they had truly feared for their lovers' lives.

A suffocating sensation billowed from my chest and up my throat as I watched them. Was that what it felt like to care so much for someone it literally hurt when they suffered?

Aris tilted his head down and ran his nose over my cheek. “I was so worried about you.”

“You know better,” I teased, but then I caught his gaze and the blazing heat in his eyes. A knot formed in my throat, and I tried to swallow it down, but my mouth was too dry.

“Just because you’re capable of handling the fae doesn’t mean I don’t get to worry about you.” His fierce voice dared me to disagree.

Stunned, it took me a moment to answer. "You're right."

He growled and pulled me close. “We need to get out of here.”

Warmth rushed through me at how uncontrolled he appeared right now. I wanted to see that, to see him let go of all his discipline, to unleash himself from duty and honor.

I nodded and glanced at the others. “We're going to take off.”

“We should all go home and rest," Samira said without looking away from Mateo. "It’s been a long night.”

“Let’s meet at my house at sunset tomorrow,” I said. “We can decide our next move then.”

"Sounds like a plan," Briar said from Angel's arms.

I tugged Aris away from them, desire burning through me. We needed to get out of here before I exploded.

Just before we reached his car, he stopped and pulled me back to him. “I’m not leaving before I’ve tasted you.”

His hands clasped my face and his lips crashed onto mine. The kiss turned hard, desperate, like he'd been dying of thirst in the desert and I was his oasis.

I wrapped my arms around his neck and pulled him tightly to me. Before our bodies met, he picked me up. I straddled him as he carried me across the park and into the dark woods beyond, still kissing me the whole way.

As soon as the forest shadowed us from the street, he pressed me against a thick tree. With just a thought, I used magic to soften the trunk’s rough surface against my back. Aris noticed and leaned harder into me until not even a gasp of wind could slip between us.

He murmured between kisses, his voice a dark rumble. “I couldn’t wait until we got home. I had to kiss you. Touch you.”

“I’m glad you didn’t.”

His hands traveled down to the edge of my shirt, then tugged it up and over my head. “I know you weren’t gone that long, but I feel like it’s been a whole month.
