Chapter 21

THE END OF THAT WEEK brought yet again another shocker to the realm.

An Apros escapee- Laidley Radcliffe

The news caught the Supernatural Realm unawares. Was it possible to escape the supernatural prison? What was the High Coven doing about it?

“I think I get it now,” Sophie frowned that Saturday evening as they crouched around a conjured tablet and read the latest news on grayston.inc. “You were played, Boke. The Councilman didn't suggest to spin this story to help you, though it does help you.”

“What do you mean?”

“She did it to undermine the High Coven's authority,” Sophie explained. “To damage their image. She has a plan B now, political dominance through your influence, so people thinking the High Coven is weak works for her.”

“How could I be so stupid?” Boke frowned.

“You were not stupid,” Markus said. “An alliance with her is still the most beneficial thing for you right now. She manipulated you to get what she wants, but it is still what you need.”

“I’m sorry, but I hate your mother, Klaus,” Sophie remarked.

“I don't like her either,” Klaus admitted, his face harsh. “She's been manipulating me all my life. Most of the times I'm not even sure if my choices are my own, or as a result of her mental games.”

“What a nightmarish way to live!” was all she could manage.

The discussions at Drachenburg among the students mirrored the discussion on grayston.inc. If the Witches of the high Coven couldn’t manage prisoners, then what benefit were they to the society? Many spoke vehemently against them, but many also defended them. Everyone could make a mistake. This break out was merely a chance to tighten loopholes.

The high coven convened and published a joint statement. This would never happen again, they assured the masses. They promised to arrest Laidley Radcliffe again and close up all the loopholes.

“All the thirteen gathered for this,” Sophie said puzzled, staring at the image of the veiled coven of Witches. “I assumed by now they would have kicked out Councilman Rheinhart. She is obviously behind the news leak on Laidley’s escape.”

“They can’t afford to look disunited right now,” Klaus said. “They are cleverer than that. They will find another way to punish my mother.”

The following Monday, Omaka announced she was leaving. Aramoita Ngata himself came to get her. He met with the Count, and Boke was called from class for the meeting.

“Omaka will come back home with me now,” Aramoita began, after greeting her tensely.

Boke panicked. “Are you breaking our alliance?”

The old man laughed gruffly.

“Alliances don't break over small matters like this,” the Count assured her.

“Or as amicably as this,” Omaka smiled, though there was a viciousness in her voice that ensured Boke understood what she meant. The breaking of alliances was a bloody affair.

“Then- why is Omaka going back home?”

“You no longer need my protection. Councilman Rheinhart has ensured of that. No one can accuse you now of breaking into Apros, when she herself declared that someone broke out. Once again, the Witches of the High Coven don't have a legal reason to harm you.
