“Um, why don’t we head back into the fundraiser and get you a glass of water?” I said to Lana, who was still slumped on the floor with her head in her hands.

She begrudgingly dragged herself to her feet, blinked slowly and let out a very long sigh. “When I saw the pair of you, I felt hope for the first time in a long time. Nothing’s going to change. I’m really stuck here forever.”

“We are getting out of here,” I said. “We just need to stay positive. We already have a lot of information on the case from the future, so we can use that to our advantage to solve things. There were only really four main suspects, Chloe—”

“Chloe France, the institute head, Carl Shepherd, the short angry scientist. Barbara Hill, Harry’s besotted assistant, and my other son Blaine, Harry’s brother.”

“Okay… so I see you’re up to speed with the case too.”

“No offense Miss Sponks, but I’ve looped this seventy year period more times than I care to remember. There isn’t another person on this planet that knows more about this case than me. I can tell you whatever you need to know, but you only need to really know one thing: it doesn’t matter. The loop won’t let you solve things. Believe me, I’ve tried!”

“And before we got here you said everyday was the same, but how many times have you sat in this empty hallway and had this conversation with us? This is the first. This is new!” Chad reasoned. Lana actually looked taken aback by his line of logic.

“Well… I have to admit I hadn’t thought of it that way. I guess this is different. Still… I don’t think the loop will let you change things. Though I’m happy for you to prove me wrong.” Lana dusted herself off and let out another sigh. “I suppose we should get back.” She glanced at her watch again. “It’s not long until… the thing happens again.” With a shudder Lana started walking back down the corridor, back in the direction of the fundraiser.

It was only then that the full gravity of her situation set in. Not only had this woman been trapped here living in a bizarre loop of time over and over again, but that meant she had to see her son die over and over again too.

“Wait,” I said, running after her so I could catch up. “Where are you going to now?”

“I have a little tradition on this night, god knows I’ve had to live it enough times. I sit at the bar and order myself a drink, and then I order another… and another.”

“The notes on you said you’re teetotal,” I said, remembering a stray paragraph from a random article that I had skimmed through earlier.

“Oh I am, except for this one night. If you’ll excuse me, I’m going to pick up my tradition. You’ll know where to find me if you need me. Good luck with trying to solve the murder. I wish you the best, I really do.
