SAN FRANCISCO

MAY 9

MONDAY, 11 P.M.

Yesterday I went to a sweat lodge ceremony. It happened to be Mother’s Day, and as I sat in the dark lodge I realized that I was sitting in a womb. I was sitting in a womb with all my thoughts and feelings, with my head and my belly and my limbs, but no one would recognize me until I emerged. Then suddenly someone asked me to sing a song. There, in the dark lodge, I sat and sang my song. Sang my song, and I wasn’t even out of the womb yet. And all could hear it and began to sing with me. And I realized that all our creations come out of us before we recognize our full birth. We are wombs within wombs and bring forth in the dark. And all that we create is our child.

And my journal is such a womb. I sit in it with my limbs and my belly and my thoughts and my dreams. But I sit in the dark for a long time and don’t recognize that I have already given birth to myself—until a song comes out of me, a dream, a vision, a sudden flash of recognition of my own wholeness. And I realize that all along I have been giving birth to my creations, my text children, even while I did not recognize my own shape yet. And I continue to collect myself, my skin, my color, my voice, my shape. And each time I gather something, it is also my creation, is also my child.
