The distance between yourself and your foe is wide, but it’s not empty. It’s filled with experiences, failures, and triumphs, with weighing up options and testing your strengths. Within the blinding mist and snow, you might catch glimpses… The wave of a red cloak, the towering height of your opponent, and a whisper of their tactics, but until the battle engages, you never truly know.

As Gabe advanced, it took a while to realise his self doubt and insecurity didn’t walk with him. Regardless, he still recognised they’d carry heavy losses. Every battle had its price. Right now, he couldn’t remember who’d advised him to evaluate in advance, to see if the prize gained outweighed the cost. Maybe Ammo? It sounded like something he’d say. He wondered how many times Ammo had walked away from a fight, realising the reward wasn’t worth the price.

Gabe determined this was worth it. The lives of everyone hiding in the snow wells, and every life before this moment affected by the Watchers’ conquests, was worth the cost. Maybe this was what Ayla had meant by doing this for himself.

For so long, Gabe had focused on Mirah’s safety, and then fulfilling the Cloud Rider’s, and everyone else’s expectations. Those things weren’t unimportant, but somewhere along the way, he had lost sight of himself. What did he want? He wasn’t sure. He didn’t see his life leading anywhere other than sacrifice, but one thing he knew, he’d become so much more than an apprentice carpenter.

Gabe clenched his fists and glanced to his left and his right. Hidden within the motherless mist, the soft sound of boots pressed into fluffy snow. Ahead, the enemy’s leather creaked, their whetstones singing tunes along the length of sharpened swords.

Gabe called to the thunder. His desire to destroy every cursed Nephilim and man who stood in his path rose with each increasing rumble. In response to the sound pealing across the heavens, the Green Adders veered inwards and attacked from the sides.

The sound was earsplitting. Unable to see anything, Gabe dispersed the mist, which crept away like a desperate lover craving one last fling. In its place, the black cloud, swirling slow and steady over the Nephilim encampment, impressed even him.

Compared to the frenzy of forked lightning capturing its prey, everything else appeared to move in slow motion. Bright flashes arced over shields, lightning pursued swords, travelling down the length of blades and striking their wielders. Cracks, loud enough to sever the sky, reverberated in the darkness.

The Green Adders hurled slingshots. The small stones, which they kept in leather pouches, brought many of their enemy crashing to the ground. Surprised by their effectiveness, Gabe focused his attention on the Nephilim who’d rallied in the centre.

Nephilim and men charged, some stampeding towards the left and the others veering right. The Green Adders and their enemy merged. Gabe released a myriad of lightning strikes, hitting Nephilim and men leading the charge. Men fell, Nephilim remained standing. Why weren’t they falling? Gabe unsheathed his sword. The acrid smell of burning flesh turned his stomach.
