Andraste burst out, nearly falling off a cliff. She regained her balance and beheld the rocky crag spilling out onto an open, grassy plain. The moon lit a river in the center, and it twinkled with starlight as the moon rose toward its apex. Movement on both sides startled her. The Lyari were so quiet she hadnât even realized they had come. There were so many. She scanned the top of the cliffs. There was hardly any space for those that had come late to the party. Flare stood beside her, staring out over the plain, the moon reflecting in her silver eyes. Andraste noticed a change among her, and the others gathered, feral, trance-like.
âStay here. Whatever you see, whatever happens, do not step from the rocks.â Flareâs voice was deep, not entirely her own. Andraste felt a chill run through her, making her hair stand on end. The air was heavy, ravenous, and exciting. Andraste jumped as one Lyari erupted into a wild howl. It was low and menacing at first, just like their enraptured faces. Then the howl grew deeper and progressed chaotically, not only in voices but in the Lyari themselves. Andraste watched enraptured as the pack changed before her eyes. The lithe and Elf like group was now shedding remnants of flesh to be replaced with many colors of hairy hide.
Snouts and sharp teeth, able to rend meat from bones, grew from once beautifully carved faces. The once delicate bones snapped and elongated into growling, snarling beasts. Their smaller mortal limbs bent and broke, growing as their bodies grew into massively muscled killers. Claws burst forth from dexterous fingers, capable of marring many surfaces. Many left deep furrows around them in the stone. Andraste admired the wicked beauty that had transformed before her. Coarse hair sprouted from their smooth flesh in an array of different colors and lengths. Pointed ears moved from the sides of their heads to the tops, slicking and twisting at the cacophony of sounds as the Lyari changed.
Each stage was beautiful and dangerous in its own way. Flare was the most terrifying of the bunch. Her coat was nearly as silver as her eyes. It seemed it drew the moonlight to her; her pelt caught and reflected the moonlight while the others remained mundane. Her claws gleamed black, the black that could ensnare you and make you lose yourself for a while.
Their grunts and howls echoed around, bouncing over the rocks and through Andrasteâs being. With no warning, the creatures of the night shot forth from the cliffs. Their long, powerful legs propelled them down and over the rocky terrain more gracefully than she would have expected. It was an amazing sight as all the Lyari ran out onto the plains. Andraste still wasnât sure what they were doing there, but she will find out post haste. Off on the horizon, movement drew her from her thoughts. She saw a herd charging for the Lyari, and yet they didnât change course. As
