Chapter 7: No Fishing

RUTH ALSO MADE contact with people all over Houston involving many different denominations. One of the engagements Ruth arranged was a meeting with the Baptist pastors’ monthly meeting of the Union Association which included churches in areas around Houston. That was a day of fun for Corrie. The meeting was in one of the buildings in the South Main Baptist Church complex. Corrie spoke to an all-men group. Ellen and I were in the background. The pastors loved Corrie and the atmosphere became almost like an old-fashioned, southern camp meeting.

She touched “close to home” on many things she said. There were a lot of, “Amens,” and laughter. Sometimes a comment such as, “That’s right!” could be heard. Corrie was in her element! She had a rapport with men as a result of her close relationship with her father.

We went to lunch with some of the pastors after the meeting. I sat by a minister named Skip Smith, minister then at Second Baptist Church, Jacinto City. He was with an evangelist named Mickey Bonner. I was very interested to learn that they were beginning to confront the occult in their congregations. They actually had an outdoor bonfire where members brought all sorts of occult “games” like Ouija boards and burned them.

I told Corrie about the Jacinto City church. She was very pleased. She always, if she had more than one night to speak to a group, included the danger of playing with the occult. She likened the situation to someone in Germany playing in the woods and accidentally getting into Russian territory.

When captured, the person would say, “But I was only playing.”

The Russian soldiers would reply, “You were in enemy territory.”

Several years after Corrie’s first visit to Texas, I attended a very large and special meeting at that same church (South Main Baptist) relating to Corrie. When the movie was made of The Hiding Place , Jeanette Clift George was cast in the part of Corrie. Jeanette was from Houston and one of the premieres of the movie was in Houston. South Main hosted a brunch and a morning meeting with Jeanette telling about her experience in making the movie. Anyone who wanted to come from Houston or the surrounding area was invited. There was a lot of publicity in the paper about the event. The church served a brunch buffet to several thousand. Every seat was filled in the large auditorium. Jeanette was wonderful as she told her experiences in making the movie with Corrie, nevertheless, I sat there grieving a little because all of those women could have heard the real Corrie ten Boom if they’d known!

The first Sunday morning of Corrie’s visit we traveled into Houston to a large, contemporary Methodist Church. It was a high moment for me. The church was crowded, the congregation seemed happy and receptive. A couple from India spoke about world hunger. When Corrie spoke, she spoke slowly and with authority. Her message was about simple things in life… your Lord places your sins at the bottom of the deepest sea and then He puts up a sign, No Fishing.
