On Wednesday morning Julia did something she hadn’t done since she’d moved to Berrywick and started volunteering at the charity shop – she phoned to say she would not be at work at Second Chances that day.

She’d been all ready to go to the shop – chickens fed, eggs collected, Jake walked, oats eaten – when she got a call from Hayley Gibson. Her name on Julia’s phone screen caused a little fillip of excitement. What had Hayley discovered from Mr Schofield? It wasn’t like her to phone Julia and share information, but maybe this time…

Julia answered.

‘I need your help,’ Hayley said, without so much as a hello, let alone a morsel of interesting new information. Hayley was not a morning person at the best of times, but even from her usual low base of early good cheer, she sounded grumpy.

‘What do you need?’ Julia said.

‘This fellow you spoke about, the one who was bullied. Can you tell me where I can find him?’

‘Marcus. He works at the big garden centre on the way to Edgely.’

‘Edgely? Damn. I’ll have to wait until I can get a car. Mine didn’t start properly this morning. It made that noise like a cat about to vomit: gghhh gghhh gghhh spit spit. Because I don’t have enough irritation lined up for today.’

‘Spark plug, perhaps?’ Julia was no motor mechanic, but she recognised the gghhh spit sound from an annoying car problem of her own. She remembered it as being rather an easy thing to solve, but that might have been because Peter had sorted it out, as always. She felt a little pang at the thought that never more would Peter sort out annoying car problems for her.

‘Maybe. Anyway, the guys from the police garage are coming. But can you believe there’s no spare at the station?’ Hayley said, irritably. ‘Walter’s trying to find one for me. But you know Walter. Can’t organise anything, poor boy.’

‘I could drive you,’ Julia said, on the spur of the moment. ‘There’s something I wanted to tell you. Something that might be useful. I was about to phone you actually, but we could talk in the car. Two birds, one stone, you know.’

She waited out the silence, until Hayley sighed and said, ‘Okay, thanks. I suppose you might introduce me to Marcus too, seeing as you already know him.’

‘Yes, we had a good rapport. I’ll be there in twenty minutes,’ said Julia, trying to keep the eagerness out of her voice.

She ended the call and immediately rang Wilma, who sounded mildly aggrieved at Julia saying she wouldn’t be coming in. Although she warmed up when Julia explained that she had to speak to the police regarding the murder.

‘Of course! Goodness, anything that helps find the killer of that poor woman. But why would they think you’d know anything?’

Julia pleaded ignorance, whilst implying that she might know more after today’s meeting.

‘You go along then, and do keep us posted. We all feel just awful about it,’ said Wilma. ‘See you next week.
