I REMEMBER THE DATE EXACTLY, SEPTEMBER 9, 1923, we received a letter by post from Becse. Opa’s heartbeat is irregular, Oma writes, and he needs a diuretic medicament made by the American Upjohn Company, not yet available in Europe. Can we obtain such and send it? He has considerable pain in the form of angina, and he is dizzy, complicating things with having only the one leg, and he can no longer work in the field, and Oma now needs to do everything. Thank God she is healthy and willing and strong and still pleased with her soul mate, ill or not, proving that she was the lucky one in this family having a true soul mate, all others, my mother’s and mine later, were not. But please, she says, obtain the medicament; a written prescription is attached.

Sitting at the window, still crying now into the second year of my father’s death, my mother says, “Let them live without the diuretic. I am living without a husband.”

My mother made no effort to send the medicament.
