Chapter 6

A motor zoomed and Deirdre froze all except for her racing heart. The sound got and louder. She darted behind a tree, shaking uncontrollably.

Please, please, please don’t be a yellow Jeep or a black Escalade.

She crouched deeper into the trees.

A red sports car roared by, sending dust and pebbles into the air.

She sighed and wiped the sweat off her forehead.

Red, yellow and blue birds hopped on the branches over her head and cawed. Through the heavy pine branches and the shade of breadfruit trees, the sun beat down on her. She wiped her hair out of her hot face. Janus’s shirt stuck to her skin and his sweats kept falling down her hips.

She edged out of her hiding place and her high heels crunched on the dirt road. Janus’s shoes had been too big for her to wear, so she’d been forced to wear her high heels. She took a step and fell face first on her hands and knees. Rocks and pebbles dug into her flesh. “Damn it.”

She whipped off her stupid shoe. Pain throbbed in her swelling ankle. She wiped the dirt off on her gray sweats, smearing brown smudges and blood everywhere. God, she was a freaking mess.

But she couldn’t stay here.

She forced herself to stand and winced. Agony shot through her and her leg gave way. She grabbed a tree branch, stopping her fall. “Shit.”

Deirdre, where are you going?

Chills rolled down her spine. Janus’ voice echoed in her head. Deirdre whipped her head around, terrified he was right behind her, but only a deserted road and a lush jungle greeted her.

She had to be imagining it.

You promised to stay.

Her heart thundered in her ears. This time his voice was louder.

She backed up against a tree, not able to breathe. “Where are you?”

I’m still at the condo.

“How….how….how are you contacting me?” Her voice was breathless.

Telepathy. I can read your mind and you can contact me.

She put her fingers on her temples. “Crap. Stay out of my damn head.”

His voice went silent.

She dropped her arms. Her chest tightened. Since he was in her head, could he find her? She groaned. He’d bitten her and probably took her blood. Shit, she was so screwed.

Up ahead, the crunch of tires crept up the road and Deirdre hurried toward the tires. A black Escalade rolled toward her.

She slipped into the forest, but she wasn’t fast enough. The jungle heat stole her breath and fear slid through her veins like a snake.

The SUV stopped. Brandon opened the door. “Deirdre, you can’t escape me.” His voice was low and menacing.

He was going to hurt her. She removed her other heel and hobbled deeper into the foliage barefoot. Leaves slapped her face and rocks jammed and scratched her feet. She forced herself to keep moving. Her ankle twisted, and she cried out.

“Deirdre, don’t make me come in there after you.” His voice was closer.

Footsteps trampled behind her. Terror strangled her heart and lungs, but she refused to give up. She grabbed a vine and pulled herself up.
