Chapter 14
Hells, the girl is hot. Val had tuned out Captain Akande as soon as he saw Maisie being dragged by Emme to the center of the dance floor.
The female undead was her usual self, all lavish curves and crystal blonde hair, ensnaring everyone around her under the strobe lights. Everyone, except him. Because, despite the slew of sexy women scattered in the club, he had eyes only for Maisie.
In a short lacy top above the hoodie tied at her waist, and which bared her perfect midriff and emphasized the gentle curve of her small breasts, Maisie had swayed to the beat with surprising wildness.
That band of naked skin at her navel was haunting him. He could not stop staring at it. And the animal in him just wanted to seize that small waist and see her arch her back just for him. He was dying to sink himself within that subtle body. His feeding had brought control, yes, but the hunger for her remained. Different now, with the carnal thirst intensified.
He growled inside as he continued to hold her in his haunted gaze.
She broke eye contact and disappeared behind two dancers.
He reined himself in, jealous that they were all so close to her, close enough to touch her skin and inhale her sweet herbal scent.
Oh seigneur, what was wrong with him?
"Focus, brother." Mag nudged him in the rib.
They were seated at a tall table near the bar to hear what Captain Akande of the Sureté du Québec provincial police had to tell them.
"Bodies ripped open, you said?" Val tore his eyes from the dance floor with difficulty to concentrate on the police captain's words.
The sturdy forty-something black woman wore a plain navy pantsuit, white blouse, with a small gold cross pendant at her neck that matched the thick gold hoops at her ears. The well-cut fabric fit just right over her heavy but muscular limbs.
"A rise of what looks like wild animal attacks." She nodded with her no-nonsense expression as she handed them her phone to show them images of the crime scenes.
"Two bodies discovered on the frozen river, one more on Mont-Royal. We can't explain it. Bears don't come this close. Wolves are rare."
Val cringed at the picturesâno one he knew, but the teens wore misshapen winter clothes and secondhand boots. Much like his recent detainees he had hoped to rehabilitate. Throats that had been ripped open. Their young lives snuffed too quickly.
"They were vampires,' Captain Akande said, her tone accusatory.
Mag barely lifted an eyebrow. "How do you know?"
"Incisors were fully out in death. You two promised there would be no more." Captain Akande's voice remained icy.
Val raised his palm. "Not by us. I can assure you."
"And truly dead vamps would have been decapitated, or burnt to a crisp," Mag added.
"He's right." Val looked at the pictures some more while rubbing the kinks out of his neck. "What are all these marks?"
"They've been tortured. One had deep cuts, another was covered with blisters in a strategic pattern. All had older scars and pricks over their entire bodies.
