Chapter 16

Rosalie repressed a smile as she stood behind the screened patio door of her childhood home. She stared at the picnic table laid out for dinner in the backyard where Ren sat with her sibling. They were all waiting for her dad to finish cooking burgers while Aunt Camille regaled him with the latest gossip from town. Max and Don had skipped their weekly dinner, more interested in going into town to tour the clubs to celebrate Gabe Beaulieu’s birthday.

There was nothing normal in tonight’s family barbecue. But as she watched Ren patiently talk to her little brother who was explaining his current video game quest, she couldn’t help but feel her heart melt. This handsome man was her husband.

He was patient with Liam, talked to Delphine like she was a person whose opinion mattered and not some silly teenager. And, of course, he got along well with Dad.

Her dad, who she’d been so worried about since her mom died, had an ease about him with Ren around.

The immortal had been a vague figure when she was a child. He’d never come inside their house and only parked in his truck across the street if some threat had been looming. Dad had always kept that part of his life separate from them.

Ren had to have been there at her mom’s funeral, but the service had been a blur. Rosalie had been too busy looking after Liam and Delphine—keeping the façade of the responsible daughter—to remember who had attended.

Ren patted Liam warmly on the shoulder before unfolding his tall frame from the bench and stepping to the cooler to help himself to some cider. He filled two red plastic cups and headed to the smoking barbecue pit to pass the drinks to Dad and Aunt Camille.

The age contrast was significant. He was centuries old but looked somewhere in his late twenties while Dad was twice that with his grayish temples and a salt-and-pepper beard, and Aunt Camille had a mature appearance despite her slim and powerful body.

While he talked to her father and aunt as the sun set behind the pine trees of the Domaine-Lassalle forest, Rosalie couldn’t tear her gaze from the enticing curve of his firm backside.

If she wasn’t constantly worried about Charlie, she would be exploring ways to make the physical side of their marriage real. What would it be like to have him take her to his bed?

She absentmindedly rubbed her bare arms, still sore from the day’s training, while remembering how he had seized her shoulder the day before in the parking lot of the tavern.

Despite her troubles, she’d been hit with a desire that had shocked her and she’d decided right there and then, that she did not have the strength to spend the night at his cabin.

He laughed at something her aunt had said and Rosalie admired the lines of his sculpted jaw. His face was perfection, all sharp planes without looking harsh. With full lips that she would welcome taking hers in a slow, seductive kiss.
