Big Ben appeared to enjoy the first film. We planned to watch both of them one after the other, burning through almost three and a half hours while the dogs slept on the couch between us. Big Ben had a penthouse apartment on the top floor of a building inside a gated community that overlooked the river Medway as it ran through Maidstone town centre. That made the location sound nicer than it was, but the apartment itself was highly desirable and spacious. His cinema room was exactly that: a separate room with a couple of couches and a huge screen TV with surround sound. The eighties movies we were watching didn’t have the Dolby sound recording that would allow us to appreciate it, but it was still the best way to watch them.
I found the films boring, predictable, poorly acted and dated, which Big Ben said was part of the allure.
The plot of the first film, Bite of the Werewolf was pretty thin: Man (played by Richard Claythorn) gets bitten, man turns into werewolf, man joins pack and fights to become the alpha while around him the cast take their clothes off and have sex or kill people with horrific, yet still very B movie, effects. One of the only points of interest was that it had all been shot in the local area. It was an Elstree Studios film and Kent was littered with castles as I may have mentioned before, so finding gothic looking castles to act as a backdrop had probably been quite easy though I couldn’t work out which one I was looking at.
The Alpha werewolf that Richard Claythorn’s character was trying to depose as leader was played by someone I thought looked familiar. As the film progressed, I became increasingly curious about where I knew him from. I was guessing that it was some other film I had watched at some point though I could not join the dots to dredge the memory to the surface.
Then, on the screen the mystery actor began changing into a werewolf. I sat bolt upright, almost ejecting Dozer from my lap as I did.
‘You alright, mate?’ asked Big Ben.
‘Who is that actor?’
‘Which one?’
I pointed to the screen, trying to form a coherent sentence that would articulate my thoughts. Frustrated with my swiss-cheese brain, I took out my phone to use the search engine.
And there was the answer to the case. The actor’s name was Jay Jeffries. Reading his name, I knew instantly that the place I knew his face from was the shaft of moonlight last night as he stood by the fence pretending to change into a werewolf. Watching him act out the transformation into werewolf was something I had watched in person less than twenty-four hours ago. He had just done it exactly the same on the TV.
Big Ben had paused the film to see what I was doing. I showed him the image on my phone. ‘This is the guy I chased last night.
