Chapter Fifteen

I hope you enjoyed your day off yesterday,” Christina announced, when Betsy came dashing into the Consultation office.

She’d taken quite a spill on the ice in front of her building this morning, but had managed to go back upstairs, change clothes and still hobble back to Burningham’s in time to prepare for her appointments.

“I did, why?” Betsy’s eyes narrowed with suspicion.

Surely Christina wasn’t about to fire her today? She had several clients to see, and most of them should generate quite a lot of revenue.

“Because you have back to back appointments almost all day, and you’re getting off early.”

“Umm…thanks?” Betsy was confused. Why on earth would she be getting off early, if she had so much work to do?

“Oh no, definitely don’t thank me,” Christina gave her a predatory smile and held up two tickets.

“What’s that?” Betsy eyed the tickets.

“These are the tickets that you’re going to use when you attend the Chappeman Fashion Week Gala to raise money for the Children’s Hospital. You’ll be representing the store, so do try to not make a spectacle of yourself,” she waved the tickets at Betsy, who stepped forward and took them.

“These are for tonight!” she exclaimed, horrified.

She had not done a thing to prepare herself for an evening of rubbing elbows with the Chappeman social set. Her inner introvert screamed.

“That’s why you’re getting off early. And it’s up to you to find yourself an escort. I was supposed to attend, but I have a prior engagement, so it’s all you.”

“But…but…I don’t even have a dress to wear,” Betsy sputtered. “And I don’t have any idea who to ask to go with me.”

“Ask your little friend from décor, and as for a dress, you can borrow anything from the Evening Wear Department, just make sure it costs less than five hundred dollars and that you return it in spotless condition.”

“No pressure,” Betsy muttered, adrenalin coursing through her veins.

“You’ll be fine. Make sure to introduce yourself to anyone who’s everyone. I want our department to be highly visible at this event. And do be careful not to spill on anyone.”

“Christina, I really don’t think that I’m cut out for this assignment,” Betsy began to protest, but her boss cut her off.

“Betsy Bergman, do you ever stop to think that maybe you are where you are in this world because you never believe that you’re cut out for extraordinary experiences?” Christina challenged, the look on her face making Betsy’s mouth go dry.

Maybe she was right. Maybe Betsy had been selling herself short her entire life. Any time that she ever wanted to try something daring, she heard her mother’s voice in the back of her mind, telling her how crazy she was to even think that she could do it. Oddly, Christina’s voice was far more encouraging than most that she’d heard for her entire life. She could do this. She would do this. And she resolved that she would do it, with Arn at her side, like a rock star.

“Fine,” she said quietly.
