LUKE AND JARED were met by Sheriff Harper, who’d just stepped from his office and into the lobby.

“That was quick,” Harper said.

“What do you mean?” Luke asked.

“I assume you’re here to ask about the shooting out at Christie’s,” the lawman replied.

Stunned, Luke turned to his partner.

“What shooting? We hadn’t heard anything,” Luke said.

“I guess you’ll find out soon enough,” Harper replied. “The 9-1-1 call came in around eight this morning from Jean Christie. She said that Ed had been shot dead in his barn. I’m waiting for verification from Michaels.”

“You have to be kidding!” Luke said. “What’s going on in this town, anyway?”

“Wouldn’t we all like to know,” Harper replied.

“Sheriff, it’s Michaels,” Jane Lyons called from across the lobby, holding up her phone.

“I’ll take it in my office,” he replied. “Excuse me, gentlemen.”

Luke and Jared stood silently, too nervous to take seats. The possibility of the two murders being connected was obvious, but there was no need to speculate. Not yet, anyway.

Minutes later, Harper emerged from the office, his face drawn and thoughtful.

“It’s true. Ed Christie’s been murdered.”

“How was he killed?” Luke asked.

“Single gunshot, and I really should stop there. I can’t say much more. This is an open murder investigation now.”

“Ed Christie was our client in the DOT challenge, Sheriff,” Luke protested. “And his murder may have relevance to Aaron’s case. Surely, you can disclose details to us.”

“In time. Not now,” Harper replied.

“He’s right,” Jared said, turning to Luke.

“We were here to meet with Aaron. Is it okay if we go on back?” Luke asked.

Harper signaled to the guard seated outside the jailhouse door. “Let them back.”

The rotund guard tossed his magazine on the desk and led the attorneys through the door to their client’s cell.

It was mid-morning and Aaron was still prone on his cot. He stirred as the iron cell door slid to the side.

“Does he need to be here?” Aaron asked, staring at Jared as he dropped his feet to the floor. “I don’t need one attorney, let alone two.”

Luke waited for the jailer to disappear behind the door at the end of the aisle.

“A team of lawyers might not be enough to save your lazy, lying ass,” Luke said, standing over the groggy-eyed prisoner.

“Why is it all I get from you is insults and pessimism?” Aaron asked.

“And why is it all I get from you is lies?”

“All I’ve told you is the truth and the whole truth, so help me God,” he said with a cocky grin.

“Where were you at the time of your dad’s murder?” Luke asked, his steely blue eyes laser focused on Aaron.

“I’ve already told you. Driving home after getting gas.”

“I want to know where you were from the time you left the Citgo station until you arrived at your parents’ home,” Luke said, stepping closer. “And answer carefully. We have proof it took you nearly an hour to travel those three miles.”

Aaron turned to Jared. “What’s he talking about?” Aaron asked, puckering his face.

“There’s a surveillance video of your car taken near the gas station.
