“Hold fast to dreams,

For if dreams die

Life is a broken-winged bird,

That cannot fly.”

“Is that a poem?” Virago asked, then quickly, “Dumb question. Of course it’s a poem.”

He continued,

“Hold fast to dreams,

For when dreams go

Life is a barren field

Frozen with snow.”

After a moment she asked, “Did you write that?”

“Langston Hughes. I tacked it up over Daisy’s hospital bed. I thought she’d like it because she loved birds. But she pointed out the only bird in the poem has a broken wing and can’t fly.”

They walked silently, and then he added, “One of the last things she said to me was: ‘Keep flying.’ I’m going to do that. As long as we’re not erased, as long as there’s hope for humanity, I’ll keep flying.”

“We should make a pact.”

“What kind of pact?” he said, looking at her.

“Just that: keep flying.”

He jammed the cigarette into the corner of his mouth and put out a hand. She reached out and took it, squeezed it, hard. They walked on.
