Sometimes after a divorce, neither parent is capable of caring for their children. In this case, when there are no other family members for them to live with, the children will go into foster care. Children all over the United States live in foster homes. A foster home may be a house or an apartment with two married foster parents or a single foster parent, and they may have other foster kids or kids of their own living there.

The state is responsible for children’s welfare, and employees of state agencies decide if children need to be in foster care. The state agency that trains and licenses foster parents is usually Child Protective Services (CPS). CPS has the duty to investigate abuse, neglect, and abandonment cases. In most states, CPS provides services designed to help families solve their problems and stay together. One of these services is foster care.
