Chapter Twelve

“I really must thank you for that vote of confidence.”

Ensuring Diana was out of earshot, checking on the passengers as they arrived, Joe made his sarcastic remark as they climbed back on the bus half an hour later.

Brenda took her seat next to Sheila, Joe dropped his camera bag on the empty seat beside him, and settled in.

Pulling the safety belt around her midriff, Brenda challenged him. “If she’s in some kind of trouble, Joe, the last thing she needs is you. She’d need someone close to her age, someone likely to understand the kind of problems that generation has. Anyway, you’re on holiday.”

He took his time thinking about it. “I do understand young people. I gave that Nadia a job after Squire’s Lodge.”

“Diana’s not Nadia. And anyway, Nadia was a waste of space. She left in less than a month. Joe, I’m only trying to stop you making a fool of yourself.”

“You don’t stop to think about when you two are making a fool of me.”

“We’re entitled,” Sheila said. “We’re your best friends. We’re not just after your wallet or getting you to work for nothing.”

Joe would have challenged them further, but the final passengers – Alec and Julia Staines –climbed onto the bus, followed by Diana. José turned the coach round, tucked it in on the right, and Diana took up the microphone once more.

“Okay, folks, this is Los Roques de Garcia. We have half an hour here for photographs, and then we’ll be on our way.”

Joe, his camera slung over his shoulder, was first off the bus. It was a familiar arrangement. No matter where they went, at home or abroad, he would always wait to assist the more elderly members off the coach.

With Diana stood alongside him, he queried her. “So what kind of problems are you having that would need a private investigator?”

“I’m not actually looking for anyone, Mr Murray. All I need is someone who might be able to do a bit of negotiating for me. I’m sorry if I’ve upset you.”

“No, no. I’m not upset. Just puzzled. Like the girls said, as detectives go, I’m the best, and when it comes to negotiating, they don’t come any tougher than me.” Helping Irene Pyecock from the coach, he waved around them. “I’m the one who haggled the price down on this holiday… Think about it.”

When everyone had vacated the coach, Joe, Sheila and Brenda ambled towards the turning circle, from where they had a grandstand view of the spectacular rock formations and Teide in the background. Renowned as one of the
