DAME LOGAN WAS standing in front of the lecturer’s desk with her hands shading her eyes, staring out into the dark room from her lit spot.

The elf heard the sudden roar of flames that were taking serious hold of the room.

“Dame Logan!” shouted the elf. “We need to leave! Now!” He didn’t wait for a reply but pushed the scientist toward the narrow door at the bottom of the stairs. Once she started moving, Alexandra followed, too. When Dame Logan spotted her granddaughter she woke from her panic.

“No! The display!” Dame Logan yelled. “We must save it!”

“It’s too late!” the elf shouted. He grabbed the scientist’s arm and pushed Alexandra in front of him. Remembering Dame Logan’s words that all the doors at the Academy of Natural Sciences pointed outward, he towed them to the door. They fell through the opening and into the small antechamber where the lecturers made the last preparations before they entered the auditorium. Here the scholars could store their outer cloak and boots, as well as scrolls, maps, books, and other material that were to be used in their lecture. Chalk for the blackboard, sponges to wipe it with, candles for the chandeliers, plus a pewter pitcher and goblets to refresh the scholars during the intermission were stored in the bookcases that lined the little room.

The elf rushed up and shut the door, then pushed one of the bookcases in front of the barrier.

“Come on!” the elf said, and continued to pull the scientist and Alexandra with him.
