Chapter 15:

A Chat with the Brigades’ Top Three

AFTER ZACKARY promised to never talk about abdominal muscles again, Cyril came over and took me away. He seemed pretty miserable, muttering something about “acting your age” and “lack of femininity.”

After passing through numerous long, winding hallways, we arrived in a room far more regal than the rest.

Where are we? The room was ridiculously spacious, lined with soft carpet and furnished with stately bookshelves, with a work desk wedged unobtrusively into the mix.

The ceiling was surprisingly tall. I stared up at it; paintings of the knight brigades and saints stared back.

“Over here, Fia.” Saviz and Desmond were sitting on sofas next to a low table in a corner of the room.

“Good evening, Captain Saviz, Captain Desmond.” I greeted them politely before breaking into a devious grin. “Ueh heh heh. Hey, Captain Desmond? I’ve found some top-secret info you might want to hear.”

“Oh? Go on, then. We’ll see if it’s as secret as you say.” Desmond gave me a thoughtful, curious sort of look—obviously. He was commandant of the military police, after all, so of course he’d be interested in any new secret information.

I, Fia Ruud, was more than happy to provide such important data! “The secret info is…risqué personal information about the captain!”

Desmond blinked. “What?”

“Captain Saviz has a six-pack! Ta-da! Can you believe it?!”

“Is…that all? I’m fairly certain that everyone in the knight brigades already knows…that.”

“Whaaat?! It’s a leak! An information leak! Isn’t that a problem?!” I cried frantically.

Cyril, right behind me, let out a sigh. “I apologize. To speak frankly, the girl is wasted.”

“Eh heh heh, meeee? I’m just tipsy! Look, I’m fine! I can keep it up! And I haven’t forgotten about that good, good alcohol the captain promised me.”

“That’s nice to hear. Why don’t you come sit down, then?” Saviz granted us permission to sit and briefly glanced toward the door. A servant appeared with new glasses and poured us a golden-colored drink. “It’s noble rot wine. It’s sweet, so it should suit your taste.”

“It’s…noble rot wine?!” I held up my glass reverently. “So expensive, so delicious… Is it really okay for me to drink it?!”

“Indeed it is,” said Saviz. “You fought well today. This celebration is for you. Glory to the Náv Black Dragon Knights.”

“Glory to the Náv Black Dragon Knights!” Cyril, Desmond, and I echoed, then moved our glasses to our lips.

Ah…delicious. The noble rot is super sweet—Saviz chose well. It’s leagues better than the wine at the meat festival, I…think. I don’t know. I’m no wine connoisseur.

“Thank you for saving me today, Captain,” I said with a smile. At the end of it all, the one who contributed the most to slaying the flower-horned deer was him—and with a single swing no less. Which reminded me… “S-sir, did you get a chance to eat the flower-horned deer meat yet?! I didn’t think, but—I—you—you’ve earned that meat the most! Oh no…why was I so entranced by my own piece of meat! I could have secured your piece too!
