CHAPTER EIGHT

Seeing

Fu Hsi sat with his eyes closed. With his inner vision he looked into the far distant future. He knew that the information he was passing along to Tan would last as long as there were people on the Earth—many thousands of years beyond the current moment. He thought of all the successors who would come after him, each one a lover of wisdom, a seeker. He knew that some of them would be powerful and would become leaders of men; others would be scholars who loved wisdom for its own sake. All of them would be good men—men shaped by the wisdom they had learned from their predecessors, and they would all be dedicated to the preservation of the wisdom. Some of them, he knew, would give their lives so that the wisdom could be saved. How he loved them all; how he wished he could meet them all.

“Perhaps,” he thought, “on the other side of the veil that separates me from the beyond, I shall meet them.” That the time was fast coming, he knew, and he smiled as he dozed off, the warm sun lighting his features. A beautiful butterfly alighted on his shoulder, its wings slowly opening and closing, as if fanning the sleeping sage.
