Judith’s mouth formed a giant O. “You want to go talk to the man you spent the last half hour convincing me probably cut my brakes and killed Sebastian? You should leave that up to the police.”

“No way is Detective MacIntosh going to listen to me if I bring this theory to him. Not without better proof. Not so soon after bringing him the financial stuff from the clinic. He’ll think I’m throwing out every possible idea to deflect suspicion from myself.”

I could almost hear him now. Didn’t you just tell me that Sebastian might have been killed because of something with his business? Can’t make up your mind? That’s fishy. Did you and your sister kill Sebastian together?

He might not actually say that’s fishy, but I wouldn’t put it past him to suggest Judith had been in on Sebastian’s murder. Though, it did sound like he liked her better than me, so maybe he wouldn’t try to drag her into it.

I held up my hands in a hear-me-out gesture. “Detective MacIntosh has the resources to look into what financial trouble Sebastian might have been in. He can get his bank records and phone records. He can pull the log from Sebastian’s GPS, if he had one. I have no way to follow up on any of that. But I can talk to Tim Gilpin without making him suspicious. I’ll tell him I’m there to give him a final update on his dogs. He might let something slip that he wouldn’t around the police.”

Judith’s concerned crinkle was back between her eyes. “Is that safe?”

My chest tightened. No way could I fend off Gilpin if he decided to attack me. I couldn’t even open a jar of pasta sauce without help. Prison didn’t seem so bad if the alternative was death.

But I couldn’t give up and do nothing. The stress would build up inside me until it crushed my lungs and left me unable to breathe.

Besides, he’d need a better reason than me showing up at his door to want to kill me. I hadn’t been involved in taking his dogs. I wasn’t a threat to him at all.

I worried my bottom lip with my teeth. Judith’s downturned lips said she wasn’t going to buy any of that. “Then we need to make it safer. I won’t go inside his house. He won’t do anything if there are witnesses.”

“And you’ll text me every ten minutes. You miss by even a minute, and I’m calling the police.”

Detective MacIntosh would have a field day if she did that. Impeding an investigation. Witness tampering. Whatever he thought might stick. He’d be sure to come up with some excuse to arrest me.

I crossed my heart. “Every ten minutes. Promise.”

Now all I needed to do was get Tim Gilpin’s address from the shelter’s files.
