Judithâs mouth formed a giant O. âYou want to go talk to the man you spent the last half hour convincing me probably cut my brakes and killed Sebastian? You should leave that up to the police.â
âNo way is Detective MacIntosh going to listen to me if I bring this theory to him. Not without better proof. Not so soon after bringing him the financial stuff from the clinic. Heâll think Iâm throwing out every possible idea to deflect suspicion from myself.â
I could almost hear him now. Didnât you just tell me that Sebastian might have been killed because of something with his business? Canât make up your mind? Thatâs fishy. Did you and your sister kill Sebastian together?
He might not actually say thatâs fishy, but I wouldnât put it past him to suggest Judith had been in on Sebastianâs murder. Though, it did sound like he liked her better than me, so maybe he wouldnât try to drag her into it.
I held up my hands in a hear-me-out gesture. âDetective MacIntosh has the resources to look into what financial trouble Sebastian might have been in. He can get his bank records and phone records. He can pull the log from Sebastianâs GPS, if he had one. I have no way to follow up on any of that. But I can talk to Tim Gilpin without making him suspicious. Iâll tell him Iâm there to give him a final update on his dogs. He might let something slip that he wouldnât around the police.â
Judithâs concerned crinkle was back between her eyes. âIs that safe?â
My chest tightened. No way could I fend off Gilpin if he decided to attack me. I couldnât even open a jar of pasta sauce without help. Prison didnât seem so bad if the alternative was death.
But I couldnât give up and do nothing. The stress would build up inside me until it crushed my lungs and left me unable to breathe.
Besides, heâd need a better reason than me showing up at his door to want to kill me. I hadnât been involved in taking his dogs. I wasnât a threat to him at all.
I worried my bottom lip with my teeth. Judithâs downturned lips said she wasnât going to buy any of that. âThen we need to make it safer. I wonât go inside his house. He wonât do anything if there are witnesses.â
âAnd youâll text me every ten minutes. You miss by even a minute, and Iâm calling the police.â
Detective MacIntosh would have a field day if she did that. Impeding an investigation. Witness tampering. Whatever he thought might stick. Heâd be sure to come up with some excuse to arrest me.
I crossed my heart. âEvery ten minutes. Promise.â
Now all I needed to do was get Tim Gilpinâs address from the shelterâs files.
