Chapter 14

Macleod sat in the passenger seat as Hope drove the car back to the rather upmarket estate where the DCI’s house was located. The day was grey, and it felt cold which in a lot of ways reflected Macleod’s mood. Something needed to break, because at the moment everything they chased ended up with one of his team facing peril. Clarissa was okay and he thanked God for that, but he was getting sick of this.

The DCI was in some ways a punt in the dark, but he couldn’t forget the fact that the man knew that Clarissa was going down to the borders. He knew about the address. He knew Winston Arnold. Somebody in the group they were chasing seemed to know where to be, when to close off possible leads, even if it meant taking out their own members.

‘Look,’ said Hope. ‘Two cars in the drive. The wife must be in. Before when we went, he didn’t want us to come in. Didn’t want her involved in any of it. Seemed a little bit over the top. I mean, you might not want Jane in the room, but it doesn’t stop you inviting colleagues into your house.’

‘It’s not uncommon,’ said Macleod. ‘I do try and shield Jane from a lot of what we do.’

‘But it was me coming for a conversation, me looking for help at that time of the morning,’ said Hope. ‘Didn’t feel right.’

Hope parked the car outside the front of the house, and they walked the driveway, past both vehicles to the front door where Macleod rapped loudly. Hope noted there was a doorbell but Macleod ignored it and rapped the door again instead.

‘Hello,’ said Lawson. ‘Come in. How are the pair of you anyway? How are you holding up?’

‘As well as we ever do,’ said Macleod.

‘Somebody told me that they tried to blow Clarissa up.’

‘Who said that?’ asked Macleod.

‘Word from the station. I’ve still got a few people in there who like me. Although I think I kind of made a rod for my own back the way I treated you. Sorry for that, Seoras. I just got it completely wrong.’

‘That you did,’ said Hope.

‘You did tell me,’ said Lawson. ‘But come. Come on in.’

‘We see the missus is at home. Are you sure this is all right?’ said Macleod.

‘Of course, it is. She’s just flittering about upstairs. We’ll not disturb her. Don’t need to bring any in front of her.’

‘I understand,’ said Macleod. They marched through to the front room.

‘Just take a seat on the sofa,’ said Lawson. ‘Can I get you anything?’ He stopped and looked at Macleod. ‘Decent coffee, isn’t it? Ross made you decent coffee. I don’t think I’ll have your type here.’ The man seemed nervous, chattier and more welcoming than he’d ever done to Macleod before.

‘Shall I come give you a hand?’ asked Hope.

‘No, no, no, you sit down there.’ The man began to fuss and then walked out into the kitchen.

‘Are you sure you’re all right?’ asked Macleod loudly when he heard something thump.
