Chapter 13

She needed to talk to Lorna again. Harper had the feeling Lorna saw or overheard something between Connor and Landon that was important. On top of that, she knew every inch of land in the botanical garden. If anyone would know where to find something missing, it would be her.

Maybe it was wishful thinking, but she wondered if Lorna knew where Connor could reasonably hide something as small as a camera SD card and be able to find it once he returned later. Or maybe she already found it.

Last night, she called Lorna and it went about as well as she expected but Lorna eventually gave in.

“You’re not going to let this go, are you?” Lorna asked with a heavy sigh.

“Sorry. I promise it won’t take long,” Harper said.

“Fine. Come first thing in the morning, eight o’clock.”

“I’ll be there. Thanks, Lorna.”

The dial tone beeped and Harper was grateful that Lorna only hung up on her instead of cursing her out or some other similarly bad ending.

That was last night and now Harper walked up the slight hill to the research facility, eager to know more about why the flower was so important and if it had any connection to Connor’s murder.

She needed someone to shed light on this or she’d never gain any traction with solving Connor’s murder. Other than telling her it wasn’t premeditated and that the camera’s memory card was missing, Marc was being suspiciously mum about everything. It could be because she told him she didn’t want her parents too involved or it could be that there wasn’t much to tell. Either way, she needed answers.

The wind picked up and whipped around her as storm clouds rolled in off the ocean. They’d gotten an unusual amount of rain so far this winter and Harper wondered if this would be another downpour. If she didn’t want to get caught in the rain, she would have to hurry.

Jogging the last few steps toward the research facility, she pushed through the gate and went up to the front door, knocking three times.

Nobody answered, so she tried again.

“Lorna? It’s Harper. Are you there?” she called through the door.

Nothing. Not even a peep. It was like no one was there at all.

Checking her watch, she made sure it was the time Lorna said to meet. Harper had a feeling Lorna didn’t like people who were late and since Harper was already pushing it by asking all her questions, she didn’t want to make things worse.

Bouncing on the balls of her feet, Harper knocked again. Maybe Lorna decided she didn’t want to talk after all. Or maybe…

Dread began to curl through Harper’s gut. Something seemed off. With the last murder so fresh in her mind, she began to worry that something happened to Lorna even if Lorna was the second suspect.

Going around to the back of the research facility, she peeked in all the windows. Most had the blinds closed so she couldn’t see inside. Reaching the side door, she jiggled the handle but it was locked.
