It struck her then that the full review in the English Club newsletter had quite a detailed and complimentary description of the bedroom Mr. Humble now occupied. The room he had insisted on occupying, never looking at any other. A room with strange creaks and cracks, a room which he seldom left, and then only in the odd hours of the morning, such as now.

He'd said he arrived at their door at random, hadn't he? Confused by the storm. But they'd seen him looking for street numbers. At least it appeared so.

When the review was published, what had Mother done? She'd gone down to the English Club and taken every copy they'd give her. She and Eleni had left copies in taverns, and wharf houses, and shipping offices, and a few museums and theaters. Even a brothel. Anywhere an English-speaking traveler might go. Anything, to get one more tenant to keep us afloat.

Could he have seen this? Could he have wanted this exact room?

Creaks.

Cracks.

Why?
