Anna was a logistics genius. Lee watched her make arrangements for Scott’s attorney with someone that she’d known for several years, and then they all met at the police station for his official booking and quick bail release. Christina’s brother never actually spent any time in jail. Self-defense, that was what Scott would plead, and with the violent record Frank had, chances were solid, in Lee’s opinion, that the jury would agree with him.

It was too late to go to the shooting range, they’d missed lunch, and Lee was so hungry he could eat Rusty’s leather dog chew. But over the past few hours, Anna had held his hand at least a dozen times. He almost did feel like her boyfriend. Now he needed an hour or so to read through those divorce papers and sign them, and then maybe he could consider another relationship.

Lee opened the back door of his car, and Rusty jumped inside. He’d had a good walk along the greenbelt near the police department. Anna sat inside, quietly typing on her phone. She must have her whole investigation on that thing. Her binder might be a backup.

After he turned over the engine, Lee asked, “Where to now?”

Anna let out a soft sigh and leaned her head back. “I’m hungry.” She looked in the back seat. “How about we get some groceries and go back to your place? I’ll cook. You read your divorce papers.”

Lee laughed and shifted into gear.

“And then after dinner, we can look through my family albums and discover the answer to my dad’s hair color.”

“Does that make a difference now?”

“It might, if he had an affair and my mother adopted me from that liaison.”

“That would be an interesting twist.” Lee took hold of her hand, and she squeezed his fingers. “Are you feeling any better about—you know—the test results?”

“Honestly, Lee, I haven’t had two minutes to think about it.”

“That’s because you’ve been too busy taking care of a whole family.” He gently squeezed her hand. “Have I told you how much you impress me?”

Anna gave him an impish grin. “I think you might’ve mentioned it before.”

He kissed the back of her hand.

“I told you, I don’t kiss married men.”

“You didn’t kiss me.” And to prove it, Lee kissed her hand again, this time a little slower. Anna sighed softly. He took that as a good sign.

“Guess what I missed?” Anna said after he stopped distracting her.

“I can’t imagine.”

“I was supposed to meet with the window repairman an hour ago. He called while you were walking Rusty to reschedule for Monday.”

“That’s right. I’d completely forgotten about that.”

Anna smiled widely. “He said he wouldn’t charge me for this missed call, so that’s good news.”

“Yeah . . . You said you needed to look for a job before long?”

She dropped her head against the headrest. “I think so. Going to college will take too long. Or I could do both at the same time, I suppose.”

“Have you thought about applying for the Phoenix Police Department?”

She straightened. “What?”

“Come on.
