21.

Three hooded figures blocked the way. I yanked my hunting knives from their holsters while, on either side of me, Shade and Elaran drew their blades as well. The cloaked men took a step forward.

It had been four days since we’d outed Marcellus’ hand in the explosion. Civil unrest had spread through the city and the General had been losing support by the day. We’d been bracing ourselves for some kind of retaliation, but so far nothing had happened. I had a feeling that was about to change.

The man in the middle removed his hood and the sudden light revealed the scowling face of General Marcellus. He seemed completely unfazed by the weapons pointed at him from across the alley as he strode forward between the gangly buildings encapsulating the side street. Behind him, his two companions dropped their disguises as well.

“You have been busy,” General Marcellus said when he came to a halt a few strides in front of us. The Fahr brothers took up position next to him. “Framing me for the warehouse fire. Clever.”

“It’s not really framing when you’re actually responsible for it,” I pointed out.

“And that stunt during my dinner,” Marcellus pressed on as if I hadn’t said anything. “I wonder, how did you manage all that?”

Shade returned his swords to the sheaths strapped across his back. “Why have you come, General?”

“It is time to stop this nonsense.”

“So, you’re surrendering?” I said, a smirk on my lips.

“I am not surrendering,” Marcellus growled at me before turning back to Shade. “But this foolishness has to end.” He motioned at the two brothers beside him. “William and Eric Fahr will accompany you back to your accursed island and deliver the peace treaty I have drafted for your king and the queen of the elves to sign. And then, you will leave my country and my election alone.”

“I will need to see the documents beforehand,” the assassin said.

General Marcellus flicked an impatient hand. “Fine. They’ll show it to you at the harbor before you board the ship.”

“They will show it to me, but I’m not boarding your ship.” Shade tilted his head slightly to the right. “We’re taking our own ship.”

“Suit yourself.” Marcellus returned the assassin’s gaze with a hard stare of his own. “If you do anything else to mess with my campaign, I will tear up the peace treaty and have you executed.”

Before anyone had time to answer, General Marcellus whirled around and strode back down the street. After one last venomous look, the Fahr brothers turned around as well and followed the General’s billowing cloak out the alley.

I glanced at my companions. “So we won?”

“It would appear so,” Shade said.

Elaran shoved his swords back in their sheaths and crossed his arms. “We haven’t won until that document is back home and signed by Faye and your king.”

“Such an optimist, aren’t you?” I rolled my eyes at the grumpy elf.

“You’re one to talk.”

The Master of the Assassins’ Guild interrupted our arguing by clearing his throat. “We need to head back and let the others know.
