Marc Cambridge twisted around as Heather spoke and, when he saw no one standing behind him, turned back with an open mouth. âWhat does she mean?â he said, his face grey.
âHeather, dear,â said Mrs Lionel, walking over to the girl. âWho do you mean?â
Heather turned teary blue eyes to the older woman. âHim.â She shook her pointed finger. âJoe.â
âOh no,â said Marc quickly, âIâm not Joey Cambridge. Joeyâs my father. Iâm Marc Cambridge.â
âWait on a moment.â Hannah folded her arms across her chest. âWhy should Heather know someone called Joey Cambridge? We donât know him.â
âAsk her,â said Rosemary mildly.
Hannah let her arms down to tug at Heatherâs sleeve. âWho do you mean, feathery Heathery? We donât know anyone of that name.â
Heather blinked slowly and focused on Hannah. âJoe.â She pointed to Marc.
âHang on,â said Holly, staring at Marc, âI think I remember. A man bought a bird right before Dad left.â She squinted at Marc. âHe looked like you. Dark hair. Bright blue eyes. Same build but older.â She shrugged. âAs he would be if he was your father.â
âI donât remember.â Hannah let Heather go and walked over to get a better view of Marc, who cringed backwards until he came up against the window of The Preserved Mulbury. âThis guy isnât the least bit familiar to me.â
âYou were out,â said Holly. âYou had to get a load of calf milk powder in the ute.â Hannah frowned. âThis man turned up and went with Dad to see Heatherâs birds. I could hear them.â
âHe bought a bird?â
âYes.â Holly turned to stroke Heatherâs arm. âGuess which one.â
âNot the eagle?â
âYes.â
Hannah frowned. âWhy did Dad have to sell that?â
âIt was the best of Heatherâs work, and he needed the money.â
Hannah stared at her sister. âYou mean it was worth the most. Dad used the money to go away, didnât he?â
Holly shrugged. âI heard Dad playing the guitar after the man left.â
Hannah tapped her foot on the ground. âMinor or major?â
âYeah, minor.â
Mrs Lionel took Heatherâs hand and rubbed it. âWhat do you mean, minor?â
âRiffs.â Hannah shifted her weight to her other leg and started tapping it. âYou could tell the mood Dad was in by what he was playing. A Blues A minor riff meant he wasnât happy. I think he felt guilty.â
âDid Heather see all this happening?â
Holly put a palm on her forehead. âShe was in her taxidermy room so she would have.â
âOh, crumbs.â Hannah sighed. âI bet she didnât even try to stop Dad.â
Heather gave a tiny whimper and Mrs Lionel rubbed her hand harder. âWhat is it, love? Did you want to say anything?â
Heather closed her eyes. Her head dropped a little.
âShe doesnât seem very well,â said Ronnie. âDo you think she should sit down?â
âI think thatâs a good idea.â Mrs Lionel put one arm around Heatherâs shoulders. âCould we perhaps have some tea, Rosemary?â
Rosemary extended her arm to show the doorway to the house, and let Mrs Lionel and Heather go first, followed by Hannah, Holly, Ronnie, and lastly Marc, whose face was the colour of bleached cardboard.
