The door to Kane’s apartment had shut twenty minutes ago. It wasn’t that he was that loud that I could hear it from inside my suite so much as I’d been sitting beside my door, maybe with my ear against it, listening. Well, me and my ten closest crawler buddies, that was.
I leaned back, rubbing the feeling into the lobe as I gave it five minutes more, to make sure he didn’t come back before me and my entourage walked next door and knocked, not expecting an answer. “Kane? You in there? I’m out of toothpaste.”
Nothing. Of course there was no answer. He was out initiating Penny into the dark world of the Shadowlands.
I pulled down my sleeve and used that to test the doorknob. Then I used my bare hand. If Kane thought I’d checked his rooms, he probably wouldn’t be concerned with proving it by dusting for prints.
It was open. Was that a good sign or bad sign? Either he didn’t have anything to hide or didn’t leave anything to find. Either way, I’d gone this far. Had to follow through.
His place wasn’t what I’d expected. That was when I realized I’d assumed it would look like my suite. It wasn’t anything like it. Where my rooms were generic, this place had serious personality. It was Kane’s but not what I would’ve expected of the man I knew. Cold and sleek, contemporary or industrial? This place wasn’t any of those things.
The place was huge compared to mine, with warm black maple floors throughout. The couch was a worn leather chesterfield, situated in front of a stone fireplace that had a mantel halfway up the two-story ceiling.
I moved into his bedroom, having no delusions about the morality of what I was doing. If I were going to survive this new world, I needed to know who I was dealing with. No more trusting the food or taking people at their word alone. It was time for something more tangible.
I paused by the bed and ran a hand over the navy-blue spread before walking over to his drawers, feeling innately wrong as I opened each one. This wasn’t me, or it hadn’t been in the world I’d thought I’d lived in. But that world didn’t really exist, and I couldn’t be that girl.
Other than noticing that gargoyles folded his things a little nicer, there was nothing out of the ordinary.
His closet was a walk-in affair, with no need to open drawers. Everything was shelved on perfect display.
I searched the kitchen, the living room, and every surface in the place, and yet there was nothing. It was his place, it had his smell and his energy, but that was it. Not a bill or an old ID. No pictures, even.
I left, more convinced than ever that he was hiding something big.
