Chapter 26

Spider answered on the first ring. “Hi, Aydan. Sorry, I still don’t have anything on that phone. I’ve traced it back to the provider, but I have to wait for them to give me access to their database. I’m working on the other stuff in the meantime.”

“That’s okay, Spider, I’m not trying to rush you…” I trailed off as his words registered. “You have to wait for the phone service provider? I thought you could just hack into their database.”

“I can if you want me to.”

The hint of uncertainty in his voice made me pause.

“No, I trust your judgement,” I assured him. “What are you thinking?”

“It’ll take me nearly as long to hack in as it’ll take for them to provide it freely with the warrant I’ve got. Since this is a civilian case, I didn’t think you’d want me to do anything that would make the evidence inadmissible in court.”

I let out a breath. What would I do without Spider covering my ass?

“Thanks, Spider. You’re right, as usual. That wasn’t actually what I was calling about. I just wanted to let you know we’re probably going to have to drop off-grid.”

I held my breath. His next words would confirm or dispel my fears.

“Okay. Are you going to use burner phones?” He sounded completely normal, and I let out a breath of relief. Spider was the world’s worst liar. If he was hiding something or being coerced, I’d know.

“Yes, but I won’t want to contact you because it’ll show up on your phone records.”

“Oh, that’s okay,” he said. “I’ve got a couple of burners here. I’ll give you a number so you can reach me.”

My eyebrows tried to climb to my hairline. “What? Why do you have burner phones?”

“I use them for testing my security protocols. Here you go…”

He read off a number and I repeated it aloud, secure in the knowledge that it would be instantly stored in Arnie’s infallible memory until I could program it into my phone.

“Do you have your burners yet?” Spider asked.

“I have a couple, but I’ll probably get more. Here are the ones I’ll use first.” I gave him the numbers.

“Okay, got them. So in the meantime I’ve been tracking down everything I can find on Guy One and Guy Two. I’ve passed their names on to the Winnipeg police and they’ll check to see if their vehicles are still in Winnipeg. I’ve also initiated a trace on their personal cell phones, but if they’re as professional as I think they are, they probably won’t be carrying them. And I’m digging into Richard Fizgerald as well. I don’t know if there’s a solid connection yet. I’m expecting more results soon, so I’ll call you back in a little while. Let me know when you’re going off-grid.”

“I will. Thanks.”

“Oh, and, Aydan?” He hesitated, and when he spoke again, worry vibrated in his voice. “Stay safe, okay?”

“I will. Thanks.”

I hung up. “We’re all set. Let’s get out of here.”

“Slow down,” Kane advised. “Let’s plan our strategy first.
