CHAPTER 6
Motoring to Stonehenge was something she hadnât done since she was ten years old and her great aunt had taken her and Victor. Vi drove while Jack was padded in with pillows and in the passenger seat. They didnât hurry, and when they reached the destination, the fields around the stones were bright with bonfires, and Vi could hear a band playing in the fields.
She stopped the auto and then looked at Jack. âAre you ready?â
âMy costume, darling Vi, is simple. Cape, mask.â
Vi adjusted her long dress and stared at him. She let him lift her long cloak and put it around her shoulders. She had a long dress that was going to trail through the dirt with long sleeves that were beaded, embroidered, and like wings. The gown itself formed to her body, every inch of the fabric swirled with embroidery.
The suggested dress from the woman Vi had bought it from had been dark green. Vi, however, had begged a version of it in dark blue. She had a belt that was a combination of a slash and knotted silks. She looked amazing, and she knew it. Her hair was covered in a cloth that was a little bit like a nunâs but hers was edged in blue silk.
In spite of her elaborate and expensive garments, she grinned at Jack and then dipped her hands in red paint. She held her hands out for a few minutes until they dried and then faced Jack.
âWhereâs the veil?â Jack asked.
âAre you insane? How will I eat and drink whatever they are serving?â
He shook his head and then took her hand. He, at least, didnât care if her hands would damage his clothes, but she was in pure, raving love with this dress, and she intended for it to get through the day and then to wear it on her gray days.
âThis party is madness,â Jack said. âHow much do you think they bribed whoever is in charge of this place?â
âSo much money.â
âPeople could stop working on that much money, I wager.â
Vi grinned. âMaybe someone is doing just that.â
âTheyâre riding off into the night, escaping toââ
Vi stepped under his arm as she heard the shout of Dennyâs laughter. They started towards their friends and found them in a circle.
Smith was dressed as a devil; Beatrice was the angel. Rita and Ham were Alice and the Mad Hatter. Lila and Denny were both in bear costumes. They looked fuzzy and warm.
âClever,â Vi told Lila.
Then she looked to her twin. She eyed him. He eyed her. âWhat madness is this?â
Victor was Macbeth. It was just a generic medieval costume. A simple crown.
He grinned at her with such mischief, they really could have been ten years old again. âYou fool. I thought you were going to dress as a clown.â
âI was,â he said, âuntil I realizedââ
She rolled her eyes and glanced back at Jack. âNote that everyone else has matching costumes.â
âWhat can I say?â he asked.
He was laughing so hard, with such utter delight, she told him, âYou won this one.
