2004–early 2006: al-Qaeda (AQ) conquers much of Anbar Province, launches parallel government and headquarters of planned caliphate.

2005: Abu Mahal tribe and Desert Protectors overthrow al-Qaeda in city of Qaim, joined by Col. Dale Alford’s Marines. Sheiks in Ramadi begin scattered attempts to resist AQ, crushed by AQ in early 2006.

April–May 2006: Captain Travis Patriquin’s brigade arrives at Camp Ramadi, jumps to offensive push into city.
