CHAPTER ELEVEN
While it had been unsettling at the time, the note had mainly left me puzzled. Now, given the tragedy that had followed, it took on an urgency. Thank goodness Iâd remembered. I had to find that note.
At first it had only seemed like a slightly more dramatic version of the usual drama that surrounded the election of the Queen of the Lobster Fest. The title went to someone who was beloved for their contributions to the community, and they received a lobster dinner as well as a nice plaque. Constance had assigned me to take charge of setting up the voting process, and votes came in online as well as being placed in a drop box at my store.
The anonymous note I found inside the box one evening had left me more confused than alarmed. But something had told me I should save it, and I really hoped I could find it now. The most important thingsâlike my warranties and passportâseemed to sometimes end up in the oddest places, where I thought they would be âsafe.â
After the short walk home, I filled Gatsbyâs bowls and rushed up to my room, all thoughts of food forgotten. I flipped through the pages of my rare edition of Pride and Prejudice. I checked inside the vintage luggage Iâd stacked in front of my bed as a fun touch. Both hiding places held some papers that were important to meâbut no note.
Then, luckily, there it was, tucked in with some letters in the bottom drawer of a jewelry box. I unfolded it and read.
If people only knew the truth about what Delilah did, theyâd know that Delilah is not any kind of queen. The truth is so much uglier than most people knowâuglier than causing careless mix-ups with appointments. And does Delilah flatter herself to believe it is truly âloveâ between her and âherâ man? Just ridiculous!
