On Sunday morning, February 11, Steve got up around 7 A.M., as usual, and walked out to the garage. He grabbed a blue plastic tarpaulin, which he placed in the Trooper’s backseat. He also took his bow saw, a blue twenty-eight-gallon Rubbermaid container, some clear plastic garbage bags and some clear plastic sheeting, and a pint of whiskey from the well-stocked liquor cabinet.

“I have a lot of work to do today,” he told Verena. He explained that he had missed some time at his job the previous week and had to make it up, and was going to USG Babbitt for a few hours.

Steve then called his sister, Kelly, and his father to make sure they weren’t planning on coming by the shop that day. Both would occasionally stop by USG on weekends to visit or perhaps go over some paperwork. But they were both busy with other activities that Sunday. The coast was clear. Grant got into the Trooper and headed for the shop, prepared for the grimmest task of his life.
