GIDEON STARES OUT OF the rear seat passenger window of the town car that takes him to Columbia University. As they drive down Broadway, Gideon watches the everyday lives of the unassuming masses. Couples fight and ignore each other on the corner, trash gets thrown on the streets, people dart across the intersection, bike messengers rush by the car.

Before all of this, in his other life, he believed in something greater.

Something sacred.

Something worth it all.

He imagined faith meant something.

That all the suffering, the death, the convictions, would really come through in the end. That God may have been love. He was willing to give his life for it all, while he was alive anyway. He thought of the endless martyrs throughout history. It would be easy to dedicate one’s life to God seconds before execution. But to live a complete life, full of sorrows, and pain, and sacrifice, until a timely, and natural death, all for God; that’s the real sacrifice.

Now, there was nothing in the sky and it was common to feel the absence of his Creator. No intuition, no conversation, no warmth, nothing. Just an emptiness that spanned his thoughts, his memories, his actions. Another day in someone else’s life.

The car slowed down for a group of churchgoers rushing across the street into the cathedral on his left. Each one carried a Bible in their hand, smiling and talking about some holy life that, to Gideon’s knowledge, didn’t exist.

Just demons and angels fighting for the attention of an absent father.
