âThis writer claims that all of the murders in Brookminster are related somehow?â I asked, leaning over the paper with Irene, who was quickly scanning the words.
âSeems that way,â Nathanial said. âGo ahead and read it.â
The writer was rather long winded, giving a lengthy history of the dark deeds that apparently had occurred in Brookminster over the last one hundred years, describing the town as perfect on the surface, but dark and rotten on the inside.
The heart of the article, though, was a complete shockâ¦and something that I would never have expected.
âI must admit, Iâm confused,â I said, looking up at Irene and Nathanial. âThis writer thinks that Mrs. Lowellâs killing, as well as the killing of all the others in town in the last few monthsâ¦were because of a prison camp outside of town?â
Nathanial leaned against the counter, folding his arms. âWe all know that isnât true, but we still donât know who killed Mrs. Lowell, do we?â
âWhere is this camp?â I asked. âIâve never even heard of it.â
âThere arenât many outside of Brookminster that do know about it,â Irene said, giving her husband a nervous look. âItâs on a farm to the north of here, certainly far enough away from the town, and heavily guarded, no less.â
âAnd this is where what sort of prisoners reside?â I asked, my eyes narrowing.
âWellâ¦â Nathanial said, shifting uncomfortably. âDuring the war, it seems theyâve been keeping German prisoners of war there.â
My jaw dropped open. âTheyâre keeping Germansâ¦here?â I asked.
âItâs far enough removed from the bigger cities that they arenât a safety concern,â Nathanial said. âAnd if they were to escape, they wouldnât get far before someone more familiar with the area would be able to catch up with them.â
âBut what about Brookminster?â I asked. âWhat about our safety?â
âHelen, dear, it is safe,â Irene said. âThey have all been put to work under heavy guard, farming the land. The food they dig up is sent to our troops, and they are paying for their crimes against â â
âFarming seems far too easy,â I said. âThese men have killed our soldiers, dropped bombs on our cities â â
âI know,â Nathanial said. âI know,â he said again, more gently. âBut they really are under heavy guard. And none of the soldiers have ever tried to escape. I would know. Iâve been there, and asked around.â
âBeen there?â I asked. âWhy?â
âHis brother is one of the guards,â Irene said.
âI see,â I said.
âWho is this writer?â Irene asked, pointing to the newspaper lying on the counter. âTheyâre claiming that one of the Germans did escape, and they were the ones responsible for Mrs. Lowellâs death.â
Nathanial picked up the paper, examining the article once again. âIâm not certain; it says it is anonymous. But we can easily dismiss the whole article as nonsense, since we all know very well that an escaped German soldier was not the one who killed anyone else that has died here recently.â
âCan we dismiss it so readily, though?â Irene asked. âThe war is escalating, and I imagine that camp is becoming full.
