The weather turned colder as Thanksgiving approached. Crowds on the boardwalk thinned, as did the flocks of surfers in the water—though neither dwindled below the small number of avid folk who would surf, run, and enjoy the outdoors in just about any weather, year round. Walking dogs on the beach was technically against the law in Beach City, but many residents ignored the law, particularly during the colder weather, when beachgoers were rare. Most, like Missy and Dora, made sure to clean up after their dogs, keep them away from small children, and out of the roadways.

Missy and Dora took frequent walks together on the beach, often holding hands, watching the waves and letting Comfort and Freedom run free. The dogs chased after one another and bounded in and out of the surf, until Comfort decided they’d had enough and barked at Freedom to let her know it was time to go home.
