As we walked through Heiðra Eilífa, and I felt the cold glare of every valkyrie on me, I was glad I had forced Gunnar and Viggo to remain behind. They were both pissed off at me. Viggo had refused to speak to me, and Gunnar had even growled at me when I tried to pet him before leaving.

But anyone who stood beside me was a target, and if I lost my stoic wolf or my brazen feline, I didn’t know what I would do.

Actually, I knew exactly what I would do. I would kill whoever harmed them, even if they were valkyries. And I knew that would be the final wound that shattered my soul.

Badb strolled beside me as if she didn’t have a care in the world. She grinned tauntingly at the valkyries who sneered at us as we passed and let out a low laugh whenever they mouthed off to her.

But underneath her amused exterior was a predator lurking. One that hoped a valkyrie would try and mess with her so that she could show them her fangs and claws.

The Morrigan was here. And she was always spoiling for a fight.

Whatever Niall was feeling, he hid it well, but I noticed the tightening at the corners of his mouth.

I snuck glances at him as we made our way through the wide cobblestone streets, and I felt him do the same. But whenever I looked at him, his eyes were ahead of us, assessing any potential threats. The charming fae who had been my companion these last few days was nowhere to be seen.

“You alright?” I finally asked.

Three stone towers rose in front of us. The one in the center was the tallest and even from here I could make out the large arched openings at the top that allowed valkyries to fly in. Bridgeways made of rich cedar wood and stone so dark it was almost black spanned the distance between the center tower and the two that flanked it. The entire structure looked wildly unstable, but it had originally been built by the dwarves and each of those stones dripping in magic.

Jörmungandr himself could crash into those towers and they would simply bounce the World Serpent away.

This was the heart of Heiðra Eilífa, where the Valkyrie Queen waited for us.

Finally, Niall turned to face me, and I halted when I saw the mixture of sorrow and devastation in his eyes.

“What’s wrong?” Without realizing it, I took a step forward and instinctively raised my hand to his face.

Before I could pull it away, he laid his hand over mine and held it there. The warmth of his skin felt like a jolt to my system, and I could have sworn the dark magic fighting through my body shirked away from it.

“They hate you,” he said slowly. Those sharp blue eyes that seemed to miss nothing flicked over the valkyries around us before focusing back on me. “They’re your people. And they hate you.”

“Not my people,” I said sadly, feeling as though a knife twisted in my heart.
