Riven was waiting for me when my shift in the kitchens ended. We walked in silence through the network of tunnels along the north section of the lower city before coming to a large circular door made of stone. The other doors I’d seen in Myrelinth had grooves along the bottom to glide the door backward, but this door was wrapped in a web of thin roots like the black earth of the wall was embracing it in its arm.

Riven knocked on the stone three times. There was only silence until the roots began to move and slither along the rock, reaching for the edge of the stone in every direction before pulling it back to reveal the room behind the door.

Feron was sitting on the far side of the room next to a lit hearth. He waved his arm casually and the door crept shut behind us. The braces he wore on his legs were strewn across the table between the chair he was sitting in and the chaise across from him. He smiled at both of us and waved his hand over the empty chairs.

Feron rested his hands on his cane. “You have come to ask me something I presume?” His lilac gaze was curious and welcoming. When I’d first met the Fae, I thought Feron’s ability to calm people came from using his mindwalking gift, but after so many hours in his presence I knew it was just part of who he was. Riven cleared his throat. “It’s about Keera’s magic. Something happened last night and . . .”

I smirked as Riven looked down at his boots, too embarrassed to finish.

Feron’s brow raised. “And?”

“Riven got too overwhelmed and his power hurt him—it cut his arms. But then the wounds healed.” Riven turned to me with strained, wide eyes. I shrugged and threw my hands behind my head ignoring Riven’s embarrassment entirely. “That’s exactly what happened.”

Riven coughed and his shadows scattered across the floor. “I believe it was Keera’s magic that healed me,” he said, still unable to meet Feron in the eye.

Feron’s smile was knowing as he nodded his head slowly. “I am not surprised.”

My chest tightened as I glanced between the two of them. “But I thought Valitherian could not wield their magic?”

Feron tilted his head. “They cannot.”

“I told you it wasn’t me.” I slapped Riven’s knee, happy to be proven right.

Feron drummed his fingers along the top of his cane. “Do not ignore the truth, Keera, only because it seems impossible.”

My chest tightened. I turned back to Feron whose soft gaze had locked on me. I swallowed under the weight of it and the meaning of his words. “You think I healed him?”

“I believe it more likely that a Light Fae has the ability to heal others, as many Light Fae before her, than one Valitherian having the ability to wield her gift when none of her predecessors have before.” Feron stood and walked over to me in slow, careful steps. He
